Who?

Sportsmanship First is a voluntary sector organisation that is helping children and adults understand the wider social benefits of respecting, supporting and encouraging others in their communities and on the playing field.

What?

Using the medium of sport we provide classes to:

  • Help children to value everyone regardless of their ability in sport or in the classroom
  • Encourage children to use praise and recognise the contributions of others
  • Empower children with the confidence to exercise self-discipline and think positively
  • Develop better citizenship by conferring a set of transferable skills
  • Demonstrate the benefits of fair play and good behaviour

Where?

More than a thousand children from four Primary Schools in West Sussex have participated in the first wave of Sportsmanship First classes which lead to the inaugural Sportsmanship First Awards this summer.

The pilot schools are:

  • East Wittering Primary
  • St Richards R.C. Primary
  • Slindon C.E. Primary
  • West Dean C.E. Primary

The second phase of workshops are now taking place at the following schools:

  • Edward Bryant
  • Birdham
  • Central
  • West Wittering

How?

Pupils experience a series of workshops, which through role-play, sports-games and creative activity teach them the ideals of Sportsmanship First.

There are three one-hour sessions:

  • Winning and Losing
  • The Great Game: Spectator Behaviour
  • Creative class-based workshop

Followed by prize giving at the SportsmanshipFirst Awards
